The Longyou Caves

An Ancient Industrial Complex Interpretation by Donna Evans

The Longyou Caves of Zhejiang, China, are often presented as an archaeological mystery. Twenty-four enormous artificial caverns have been identified, carved by hand from argillaceous siltstone and sandstone. Millions of tons of material were removed, yet no corresponding mountain of excavation debris has been found. The purpose of the caverns themselves also remains disputed. I believe these two mysteries have the same straightforward explanation: the excavated material was not waste. It was the product.

The walls of Longyou preserve extensive evidence of repeated hand excavation. Rather than imagining the site primarily as a monumental project intended to create enormous empty rooms, it makes more sense to consider what the workers were removing. The geology includes clay-rich argillaceous material suitable for processing, while Zhejiang was already home to an important and increasingly sophisticated pottery and ceramic industry in antiquity. Clay-rich material could potentially supply pottery and other ceramics, including bricks and tiles, while useful stone and coarser material could serve construction purposes. In such an industry there would be no reason to expect millions of tons of spoil piled beside the caves. The material leaving the caves had economic value and was carried away for use.

This interpretation also explains why identifying monumental buildings constructed from recognizable Longyou stone does not necessarily solve the problem. The surviving tool marks indicate extensive incremental removal rather than simply extracting millions of tons as finished rectangular building blocks. Material destined to be crushed, sorted, weathered, washed, fired, or incorporated into construction could disappear into a regional economy without leaving an obvious archaeological counterpart to the cavities.

The location is particularly suitable for such an operation. Longyou lies beside the Qujiang River, providing a natural transportation system for moving raw materials and finished products. Over a sufficiently long period, an industrial extraction site could create enormous underground spaces while distributing its output throughout the surrounding region rather than accumulating it locally.

The caves also appear to have had a useful secondary life as water-storage facilities. Their ancient drainage features demonstrate that water management mattered while people were working underground: active excavation naturally required the working areas to remain dry. Once extraction from a cavern was complete, however, maintaining that drainage was no longer necessary. The finished underground chamber could instead be allowed to fill, converting the exhausted extraction space into an enormous reservoir. Indeed, the Longyou caverns survived into modern times filled with water and were locally regarded as ponds until several were pumped dry, revealing the artificial chambers beneath.

This suggests a remarkably efficient two-stage use of the landscape:

extract the useful geological material โ†’ distribute it for pottery, ceramics, and construction โ†’ allow the completed underground chamber to store water

Such a system wastes very little. Even the space created by removing the raw material acquires another practical function.

Several pieces of evidence make the ceramic connection especially worthy of investigation. Longyou’s rock contains argillaceous, clay-rich material; Zhejiang possessed a major ancient ceramic tradition; waterways provided transportation; and Western Han glazed pottery has actually been recovered from sediment within the caverns. None of these observations individually proves that Longyou supplied ceramic workshops. Together, however, they make direct testing of the hypothesis surprisingly straightforward.

The most decisive next step would be compositional analysis. Samples of the Longyou argillaceous material and clay interlayers could be compared through petrography, XRF, XRD, or related methods with ancient pottery, ceramic building materials, bricks and tiles recovered from the Longyou and Quzhou region. If distinctive mineral or elemental signatures connect local ceramic products to material from the caverns, the supposed mystery of the missing excavation debris could largely disappear.

The Longyou Caves may therefore be mysterious primarily because attention has traditionally focused on why ancient people wanted the caves, rather than what they wanted inside them. Their enormous size need not indicate an equally enormous ceremonial purpose. They may instead represent the negative remains of a long-lived industrial landscape – millions of tons of useful material gradually extracted, processed and dispersed, leaving behind vast chambers that subsequently became reservoirs.

The missing material may never have been missing at all. It may still surround Longyou today – in its pottery, ceramics, buildings and archaeological remains.
